A beautiful, secluded house with a private heated pool, air-conditioning, internet & outdoor kitchen/dining facilities in an elevated setting of outstanding natural beauty with excellent access roads.

Overview

Casa Sofia is situated in an elevated position in a very attractive rural setting amidst an orchard of almond trees in hilly countryside. From the house there are stunning panoramic views of mountains across a beautiful valley visited by a variety of birds including birds of prey.
The house is equipped to a high standard. There are two bedrooms, both with air-conditioning/heating, two bathrooms, fitted kitchen, lounge and dining area. The lounge features picture windows with views across the valley. The lounge has a wood burning stove, and a television. The kitchen is fully fitted and well equipped. The lounge and kitchen have air-conditioning/heating. The domestic hot water is provided by solar panels, so it is virtually cost free, and there is ideal water pressure for showering. Access to the property is excellent, on sealed roads. Wifi broadband internet access is provided. Guests pay for the electricity they use during their stay at a rate of £0.14/€0,16 per unit. Guests who want the pool heated to coincide with their arrival, pay £100 in cash, when they arrive, towards the cost of pre-heating the water; if the actual cost is less than £100 they will receive a rebate.

Family heated swimming pool available in all seasons/poolside kitchen.
The family heated swimming pool is situated to the side of the villa. The surrounding area is beautifully paved with hand crafted stone mosaic. The poolside kitchen building beside the pool is spacious and well equipped with a fitted kitchen, gas grill, and a microwave oven. Dining table and chairs for five people are provided for eating inside or outside. The wooden pergola offers a shady area. There are spectacular views from the poolside building across the swimming pool towards the surrounding countryside. There is another terrace with a table and chairs for eating outside just near the kitchen door. The two terraces are connected by a path to facilitate access for wheelchair users.

Our village
The village of Villanueva De La Concepcion is a lovely, friendly, safe place where guests may enjoy the lively, festive traditions of a typically vibrant Andalucian village. Within short walking distances there are bars, restaurants, supermarkets, shops and other facilities, such as the recently constructed municipal swimming pool, a large pool in grass lawn surroundings with its open air bar with views towards the Torcal. El Torcal National Park, with its unique natural limestone sculptures and various walking routes, lies above Villanueva and is 20 minutes away by car. Beyond El Torcal the beautiful historic town of Antequera with its many ancient churches, distinctive architecture and prehistoric caves is a 30 minute car journey from Villanueva. El Chorro Gorge, Cordoba, the White Towns, Seville, Granada and Gibraltar are day trips by car. Malaga and Malaga Airport are approximately 45 minutes by car and the drive to Costa Del Sol resorts takes about one hour.

Casa Sofia was a real country retreat. The views were fantastic and the villa had everything we needed. Unfortunately we did not have very good weather so left the villa in search of sunshine. Very good book selection! It was definately rural so don't expect to walk in to town for an evening meal, town is a 15 minute drive which I had not envisaged.
If the weather had been good it would have been perfect!

Review Submitted: January 4, 2011 Date of Stay: January 2011 Our family of 4 thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Sofia. It was one of the nicest places weve stayed - fabulous views, well equipped and furnished (we did our own cooking and everything we needed was there), super pool (just warm enough to swim at New Year), and very pleasant owners, who were friendly and helpful but also sensitive to our privacy. Barry met us late at night after a delayed flight, and they had shopped for us so there was no pressure the next day. His bread is very good and the villa is decorated with Nalinis artwork which I liked very much. We explored some of the local area - great walks in El Torcal, El Chorro and nearby national parks, all within an hours drive. The nearest town, Antequera, is interesting (moorish castle, churches and dolmens) and attractive, with huge supermarkets (the supermarket in the nearby village is quite adequate though). Casa Sofia is also a great place for relaxing and doing very little - we read a lot and played games, and had it been warmer we would have used the pool a lot more. A car is needed for getting around as its about 10 mins drive to Villanueva de la Concepcion (where the shops are). We would very much recommend the villa. I live very happily with my wife, Nalini, in Santa Maria Del Cerro, near the village of Villanueva De La Concepcion. I was teaching in England, and Nalini was an HMI, when this life journey began for us townies in 1999. We bought land, a green field plot on a hillside, and decided where to site our house on the land, and what it would be like. Later we also bought two rental properties, to realise the dream of working for ourselves in our chosen environment. Without intruding on our guests' privacy, we like to impart our enthusiasm for what we value and appreciate in our life here in rural Andalucia. We try to imbibe the culture of this people, inasmuch as a foreigner can gain an insight. For the most part we like the local people we meet for their warmth, their self-possession, and their unpretentious charm. To relax I explore the villages, towns, cities and countryside of Spain. I enjoy eating out with friends and family. We entertain our children and grandchildren here. The beauty of nature and the climate encourage, and enable us, to spend time working and relaxing outdoors. Life here, which is so different from what we were used to in England, continues to please and satisfy us: we are still “on holiday” every day. Nalini is a practising artist, who is inspired as a result of what she experiences here in Andalucia. When I visit England, I am conscious of missing what I leave behind here, such as the bright light and space – as in wide open spaces, as in enough space to park ten cars; as in having space in the day to talk to my neighbours. Here I relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures of driving into the village, the first view of the Torcal a few minutes into the journey, or going round the Torcal, and later the view of the castle on the approach to Antequera. Here, I, the boy from the East End of London, know that I have come a long way, as I gaze across the swimming pool at distant mountains, but I also enjoy days out with family and friends down on the coast.
