Rural self catering holiday accommodation high in the hills of the Alpujarras, southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada mountains of Andalucia, southern S

Overview

Formerly a working farmhouse, Cortijo Opazo can be found in the countryside near the villages of Pitres, Portugos and the area of La Taha, about 25kms from the town of Orgiva. It is surrounded by ancient terraces used today by shepherds and market gardeners. The cortijo has been renovated recently to provide holiday accommodation in two delightful lodgings, Opazo Vista and Opazo Jardín. These apartments can be rented out on a self catering basis, or as part of a fully catered, all inclusive walking holiday.

Self catering apartment 'Opazo Vista' 2 people.

From the south facing verandah the entrance of Opazo Vista leads into the open plan living accommodation. This is a spacious area with a sofa and a double sofa bed, a large dining table, four dining chairs, a well stocked bookcase and a log burning stove. The kitchen is fully equipped with fitted cupboards, full sized oven, a glass ceramic hob with four rings, overhead extractor fan and full sized fridge. Plates cutlery etc are provided for at least four people and there is an extensive range of cooking equipment. The kitchen is tiled with ceramics in traditional local designs, and is clean and modern.

From the kitchen there is a short connecting passage that leads to the bathroom and bedroom. The bathroom is fully tiled with a sink, W.C. and walk-in shower. Shelves, hooks, mirrors, towel rails and a wall cupboard are fitted.

Next to the bathroom is the bedroom with a double bed (200cms x 150cms) side cupboards with table lamps, chest of drawers and hanging space. This light and airy room has two windows facing east and south that look out onto the surrounding countryside.

Opazo Vista is situated to the front of Cortijo Opazo and has a glorious south facing covered verandah (known locally as a tinao) with expansive views out over the valley of the Rio Trevelez and across the summit of La Corona to the mountains of the Contraviesa. To one side of the verandah there is an open patio for your exclusive use which enjoys sun all day long. Outdoor tables, chairs and sun-loungers allow guests to take full advantage of this splendid location. The private patio area leads on to the delightful communal garden.

Throughout the accommodation the floors have been finished in warm terracota ceramic tiles. There is an underfloor heating system in all areas, the use of which is included in the rental. During most of the year the days are warm enough for t-shirts and light clothing but since the area is mountainous the evenings and early mornings in the cooler months can be chilly and we have found the heating system invaluable. The log burning stove is provided as an additional cosy luxury, logs can be purchased locally.

Opazo Vista is ideal for two people but there is a sofa bed that opens up into a comfortable full sized double bed. We are happy to provide additional bedding for the use of this facility.

The Location
Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains of southern Spain, Cortijo Opazo offers a perfect holiday destination if you are looking for beautiful scenery, relaxing surroundings and an area that is rich in cultural history. The region is known as 'Las Alpujarras' and is an enchanting part of Spain. Treasured by the Moors as a paradise location this mountainous area is situated between the summits of the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coast of the Costa del Sol. As a holiday destination it is ideal for walking, cycling, riding, photography, painting and the appreciation of flowers and wildlife; but most of all for just unwinding and taking time out. It is within easy striking distance of the historical city of Granada with its fabulous Alhambra Palace, yet is close enough to the coast to enjoy a well deserved day lounging on the beach. During the winter and spring you can even go skiing on the high slopes of the Sierra Nevada - less than two hours by car.

Mulhacen is the highest peak in the area (and in mainland Spain) at a little under 3,500 metres. Cortijo Opazo is situated at 1,250 metres in the high Alpujarras and enjoys an excellent climate. The conditions of Andalucia in southern Spain ensure that there is plenty of sun during the winter months when the weather is usually warm enough for t-shirts and light clothing during the day. The summer months are hot but the altitude means that when evening comes there is always a delightful stream of cool air flowing down the valley from the high Sierras, a type of natural air conditioning.

Around Cortijo Opazo we have established delightful garden areas that we are extending all the time. Throughout the year you will be able to enjoy a variety of plants and flowers, many indigenous to this area, many grown by way of experimentation. You will feel free to wander from terrace to terrace and find your perfect place to contemplate the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Our stay at Cortijo Opazo was absolutely first class in every respect and probably the best apartment of its type we have rented in 40 years of travel.
Robert and William are great hosts, Roberts detailed walks information was first class and as clear as a bell, Williams dinners were excellent.
The apartment is comfortable very clean and warm with great views in a spectacular setting for walks and local visits.
Our weather was brilliant sunshine on first day for walks, but our walk in the mountains the next day resulted in a complete soaking in some of the worst rain we have ever been out in, but on our return a large basket of logs had been left for us to light the wood burning stove and dry and thaw out, thats the type of wonderful service Robert and William provide.
We hope to return for more!

We had an excellent holiday at Cortijo Opazo. The views from the veranda were great, the cortijo is finished to a very high standard and has everything you need.

The location could not be better with great access to walks and the local towns, without the need to drive if you do not want to.

The owners are friendly and helpful and we were made most welcome.

We have stayed in many B&Bs and cottages and can say in our opinion this is definetly among the best. We have no hesitation in recommending Cortijo Opazo (and wish we had stayed more than a week here!)

What a shame we only booked one week. Both of us can truly say this has been a holiday of a lifetime. The walking is superb and we feel we have only scratched the surface! Wiliam and Robert are wonderful hosts, there if needed but never 'in your face'. The accommodation is perfect, it has been such a surprise to find such a well equipped kitchen. Will definitely recommend it to our friends (but would quite like to keep it a secret).Jane and David Nicholson, September 2006

We have spent a truly blissful week here at La Corona, Cortijo Opazo. We had lots of plans but found it very difficult to tear ourselves away from the patio and the amazing views. We spent many happy hours (day and night) watching the world go by and never getting bored at the stunning scenery. The dogs, the garden (absolutely delightful), the views, the wonderful apartment, have all made a very special holiday. Last but not least, Robert and William, thank you so much for being great hosts. Your welcome on our first night along with the fabulous food you cooked will always stay in our memories. This has been a very special holiday for us and we are already looking forward to coming back.Eric and Tracie, September 2006

"We had an excellent stay at Cortijo Opazo, the attention to detail in making the stay comfortable is fantastic, welcome pack on arrival including cold beer, underfloor heating and log stove, laminated walking guides and maps, and many more perosnal touches. We'll be recommending this place to all our friends." Gioconda and Chris, London, November 2005"How often do you find a self catering apartment with everything you could wish for, and more. We've had a wonderful holiday, all credit to our hosts." Terry and Maureen, Gloucestershire, UK, September 2005."A wonderful place to stay. Superbly furnished and equipped. You could not wish for better surroundings and views. The terrace is a perfect place for breakfast, painting, bird watching, siesta and general relaxation. The walks were breathtaking, in more ways than one, and we appreciated the fantastic walking notes which gave us the confidence to be more ambitious with our hikes. Robert and William were so hospitable and full of fascinating information about the area. Not forgetting Ella, everyone's favourite dog."Robert and Jenny, Limerick, July 2006
