The port of Arguineguín, in Gran Canaria, is brimming with joy
Life at the port of Arguineguín is very lively. In addition to the daily hustle and bustle typical of a fishing port, there are numerous visitors who come to the Fishermen's Guild to savor broths, limpets with mojo, or all kinds of fresh fish just brought in from the sea.
Furthermore, Arguineguín is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Gran Canaria because it retains other attractions that add color to a great vacation. For example, on Tuesdays, this Canarian town is full of joy and life thanks to its traditional market. There are many varied stalls that add color, and above all, flavor, to the scene. Here you can enjoy browsing the products available: fruits, fresh vegetables, typical cheeses, and all kinds of local products.
In the surrounding areas, there are also places well worth a visit. For example, in the Arguineguín ravine, surrounded by palm trees and accessible via a picturesque steep and winding road, lies the largest reservoir in Gran Canaria, the Soria Dam, which stands 120 meters tall.
Natural trails and cultural visits
If nature is your thing, there's no better plan than discovering the area's natural wealth by walking along the many trails available to explore and reach – as a suggestion – the Ojeda, Inagua, and Pajonales Natural Park.
If you prefer a cultural visit, you can explore the old town of Mogán and stroll through its streets. Don't forget to enter the Church of San Antonio de Padua, which dates back to 1814 and features a beautiful wooden coffered ceiling. You can also visit the Nicolás Quesada Park in the Rincón de Mima, where you can see the five murals depicting traditional Canarian clothing. Additionally, on the road to Puerto de Mogán, you can visit the Burned Mill, an old flour mill seven meters high that supplied the entire island.
Beaches of Arguineguín
Arguineguín can boast of having one of the best climates in all of Spain, with an average of 24 degrees year-round. With this temperature, its beaches are inviting in any season. In fact, it is one of the favorite destinations for Canarians from other parts of the island to enjoy their vacations.
One of the few beaches on the island that maintains its urban character is Arguineguín beach, surrounded by the old town. It is about a hundred meters long, its sand is dark golden, and its edges are lined with round stones, giving it a very particular look.
But there's more, so here are some of the beaches you shouldn't miss during your touristic getaway to Arguineguín:
Las Marañuelas Beach
Las Marañuelas beach is the main beach of Arguineguín (Gran Canaria). With fine black volcanic sand, this cove is 400 meters long and is located next to the fishing port, protected by one of its breakwaters but open to the sea. Its shell shape makes it ideal if you are traveling with children, as its waters are calm and clear and not very deep. The ends of the beach are ideal for snorkeling because a wide variety of marine life can be found sheltered by the rocks. It is a quite safe beach with good access, beachside toilets, surveillance, and shops around. A perfect spot to spend a lovely day with the whole family.
El Pajar Beach
Its sand is fine and pleasant. It is located in the El Pajar neighborhood of Arguineguín, and traditional restaurants for eating fresh fish are located in its surroundings. The beach is usually frequented by national tourists who share the space with Canarians, as it is also one of the favorite beaches of the regular residents of Arguineguín and its surroundings.
Other beaches in Arguineguín
Besides the previously mentioned ones, there are other beaches worth visiting, such as La Lajilla Beach, a kind of natural pool with very little wave action and not crowded, which has a nice promenade, sunbeds, umbrellas, and showers. Or the charming Anfi del Mar Beach, an artificial black sand beach that has restaurants, sunbeds, and umbrellas, and is located between the towns of Arguineguín and Puerto Rico.
Restaurants in Arguineguín
Arguineguín has a wide variety of restaurants. On one hand, there are those with a good international offer aimed at tourists and on the other, traditional restaurants, more frequented by locals, where traditional Canarian cuisine prevails, with menus in which fresh fish is the absolute protagonist. These establishments are mostly found near the port of Arguineguín, where the fish you can taste is freshly caught and still wriggling. In the area of El Pajar beach, there are also restaurants with typical cuisine where you can enjoy a good meal by the sea. In the port, for example, you can visit the Fishermen's Guild of Arguineguín, and on El Pajar beach, El Boya Bar Playa, a restaurant that started its journey in 1952 when this beach was just a settlement of humble fishermen.
