Location is ideal for exploring by foot, bike or car.
If you are a meat lover, then nearby Cisternino is well worth a visit, especially at dinner time! Recently recognised among Italy’s most beautiful villages, Cisternino is a little town perched about 400 m above sea-level with a fantastic architecture of milky houses, flowered balconies, steep stairs as well as stunning views over the Itria Valley.
In the old town there are plenty of butcher shops (but not only) to choose from, enjoy a tasty meal together with your family and friends. Butcher shops are also known as Fornelli Pronti (literally “ready ovens”) and this is how they work: you go to the counter, point out what you want and then it’s up to you if you want to take meat home or have it grilled on the spot directly at the butcher! You can also decide whether to eat right there in the butcher shop or out on the street!
Local meat includes: sausages with veal or pork meat, “gnummareddi” (a mixture of lamb’s organs
- spleen, liver, heart, lung -, rolled up and tied with the animal’s intestines) and, above all, the popular bombette, small pork rolls seasoned with salt, pepper, parsley and little pieces of
cheese…Sorry, did I make you hungry? Then, it’s time to experience a Fornello in Cisternino!
