Rhodes is the principal city of the Greek island of Rhodes, in southeastern Aegean Sea and the capital of the Dodecanese prefecture. Its has a population of approximately 80,000. Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The citadel of Rhodes, built by the Hospitalliers, is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe which in 1988 was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The City of Rhodes is a popular international tourist destination.
rhodes
The green, fertile island of Rhodes is one of the most developed tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. On its northern tip, the capital, Rhodes Town, lies within impressive medieval fortifications built by the Knights of St John, a military religious order who made it their power base from 1309 to 1522. It was taken by the Ottoman Turks in 1522, hence the proud minarets that punctuate its skyline. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, its cobbled streets are crammed with boutique hotels, rustic tavernas and souvenir shops.
Cruise ships dock in the Commercial Port, just a 5-minute walk from the old town.
Sightseeing
Its a joy to wander through the pedestrian-only, cobbled streets of Rhodes Towns old town, protected by 14th-century fortifications measuring 4km (2.5 miles) in length. The top attraction is the vast 14th-century Palace of the Grand Masters, housing a museum tracing the islands history. To reach it, walk up Ippoton Street, lined with ‘inns, each one representing a different country from where the knights originated. Close by, the 15th-century Knights Hospital houses the Archaeological Museum, while the nearby Byzantine Museum displays religious icons and frescoes in the former cathedral.
Also take a look at the pink 16th-century Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent, built when Rhodes was controlled by the Ottomans. A short distance southwest of town, overlooking the sea, the Acropolis of Ancient Rhodes is home to the Temple of Apollo.
Many Agencys are offering a half-day excursion by bus to Lindos, a whitewashed hillside village crowned by a medieval fortress and an ancient Greek temple.

Shopping
The former bazaar area of Socrates Street in Rhodes old town is the best place to shop for souvenirs, though you will also find some chic gift stores in Lindos. Typical mementos include Turkish-inspired rugs, ceramics (decorated with a deer, the symbol of Rhodes), leather goods, furs (from Kastoria in northern Greece), and gold and silver jewelery. Local wines, olive oil and sponges are also good buys.
Eating Out
Greek cuisine is based on fresh, seasonal, Mediterranean ingredients, with the abundant use of olive oil. Popular main courses include simply prepared fresh seafood, plus charcoal-grilled meat and hearty stews.
When To Go
from late April to late October. Peak season in Greece is July to August, when all the main destinations are very hot and very crowded. Try to visit in May/June or September/October/November/December/January to avoid the crowds and enjoy milder weather.

rhodes city
The city of Rhodes is situated in the north-east tip of the island and forms a triangle from north to south. It is the smallest municipality of the island in terms of land area and the largest in population. It borders with the Aegean Sea in the north, the east and the west and with the municipalities of Ialysos and Kallithea in the south. The island of Rhodes is at a crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This has given the city and the island many different identities, cultures, architectures, and languages over it long history. Its position in major sea routes has given Rhodes a very rich history. The island has been inhabited since about 4000 BC (Neolithic Period). Both city and island population continue to grow contrary to national levels the city has an official population of 54,000, but the actual population is estimated between 75 and 80,000. This is caused by many permanent residents of the city registering in their place of birth during the census. Thus the citys total population, as counted by the census, is less than the number of people actually residing in the city. Currently it is estimated that 80,000 people reside permanently in the city although last census showed only 54,000.
Taxi Service
Taxis in the city are plentiful during winter, about 400 taxis serve the city and can be either found in specified taxi ranks or by phone.
Sea Service
The city hosts four harbors the central serves national and international traffic (ferried and cruise ships), Akandia harbor is currently in construction servicing mainly cargo ships and cruise ships on busy days, Kolona serves in-prefecture traffic and private yachts and finally Mandraki harbor services daily trips around the island and small yachts. The new Marina of the island is being constructed in the Zefyros area and is expected to be operational by 2009.
Air Service
Diagoras International Airport of Rhodes serves both city and the island. It is situated 14km south west of the city. It is connected to all major Greek airports and Cyprus throughout the year and during tourism season accepts charter traffic.

We loved the location, and the high standard that this villa has been kept in. We loved the courtyard and the friendliness of the other tenants in the villa compound. The only disgruntment, is that it said it slept up to six. The upstairs had a foam mattress that slept one, there should be a proper bed in that upstairs area, or a fold up bed on hand, and that could be erected in the larger sized bedroom.
But for value for money, location - it was perfect!
We really enjoyed our stay.

The villa is an absolute gem. We were so fortunte to find it. It is located inside Old Town Rhodes, in fact right across from the charming historical town wall. All sites in Old Town, inc luding beaches and shopping, are within walking distance. The newly renovated villa contains portions of the old building, circa 1500. This gives it "character". The interior is nicely furnished and very clean. It has a very charming garden with a sitting and dining area. The villa exceeded all of our expectations for a family vacation rental home. The rent was quite reasonable for a family of four as compared to hotels (hotels in Europe charge per person as opposed to per room). Above all, the property owner was most kind, generous and helpful. She offered us so many extras for no charge without being asked. There is no doubt in our mind where we will be staying the next time we visit Rhodes, hopefully soon.

Villa Roxanne was a lovely place to live, even if only for 2 weeks. Its location in the Old Town of Rhodes mean that we were never far from anywhere and if we wanted to go further afield, we used the bus. Claudia was a wonderful host and was always ready and happy to advise and assist us if we needed it. Nothing was too much for her and she was overwhelmingly generous. Thank you Caludia for letting us borrow your home. x :)

Medieval City house, garden-bbq & Terrace, free Wi-fi,all in walking distance Review #29021018 A perfect retreat within the walls of the old town, but within easy walking distance to all the many attractions of Rhodes town, the coast and the shops. We enjoyed experiencing Rhodes as locals, spent many evenings in the private courtyard and found everyone very friendly. Claudia was an extremely welcoming host and has thought of everything guests may need. We hired a car from Efram to explore more of the island and parking was no problem. Date of arrival - 5 October 2019
